Irene, the Queen of Attolia, is beautiful, but keeps a rigid countenance at all times and her emotions at bay. Gen often steals to help Eddis realize its political aims (his father, it should be noted, is the Minister of War), but as The Queen of Attolia begins, it is the Queen of Attolia who “steals” Eugenides himself by having him captured. The countries surround a sea, resembling the Mediterranean Sea area in ancient times. Eddis is one of frequently warring neighboring countries, which include Sounis, Attolia, and the Medean Empire. Indeed, he has been trained, and has trained himself, to steal anything and everything in service to his cousin Helen, Queen of Eddis. The saga centers on Eugenides, or Gen, named after The God of Thieves. And if I decide to do a reread before the fifth book comes out (which I undoubtedly will do just for the pleasure of it), I will begin with The Thief. I don’t think skipping it hampered my enjoyment in the least, except for having less of this endearing series to read. The Thief was even a Newbery Honor book in 1997. It will be very hard to do, and I have to join the ranks of those heaping praise on this series.įirst I must confess I missed the first book entirely, The Thief, because I didn’t know there was a book before The Queen of Attolia. Driven by questions about how overfishing, coastal development, and climate change were contributing to a jellyfish population explosion that has caused millions of dollars of damage, Juli embarked on a scientific odyssey that took her across the globe. Over a decade ago, ocean scientist Juli Berwald left her career to raise a family in landlocked Austin, Texas, but jellyfish drew her back to the sea. Yet until recently, jellyfish were largely ignored by science, and they remain among the most poorly understood of ocean dwellers. Made of roughly 95 percent water, some jellies are barely perceptible virtuosos of disguise, while others' luminescent glow has revolutionized biotechnology. Their sting is the fastest known motion in the animal kingdom, their venom so toxic it can kill a human in three minutes. Jellyfish have been swimming in our oceans for over half a billion years, longer than any other animal that lives on the planet. I like to give a heat level rating for all books with romance. I had high expectations because of how much I Ioved Katherine and thankfully, I was not disappointed. This book is a Gothic romance (though, that’s debatable) that was published in 1944. Finally, I decided to pick up one of her earliest releases, Dragonwyck. Cain's vagabond journey builds to a stunning climax that, like the book itself, is a fitting capstone to a remarkable career. Rounding out the narrative are angels who circumvent God's will, visions of the urban modernity that the future holds, an ironic description of Darwinian evolution, and God himself touting the heliocentric theory that will cause something of a ruckus five centuries on. God appears often and is defined less by his perfection than his faults He is morally ambiguous, "can't bear to see anyone happy," and doesn't understand his powerlessness in preventing Cain's meddling. When Cain, the first-born son of Adam and Eve, murders his brother in rebellion against God, God shares in the guilt ("you gods should.take the blame for all the crimes committed in your name," Cain argues) and makes Cain "a fugitive and a vagabond upon the earth." Cain's travels across a barren landscape lead him to a lusty tryst with Lilith and the witnessing, or altering, of many key events of the Old Testament (the building of the Tower of Babel the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah).
